Level 3 Mathematics is a one year course, which is designed to extend the curriculum for those students who wish to deepen their mathematical knowledge and develop skills beyond the level that their GCSE provided. It is a great course to study in conjunction with the humanities and sciences, as many of the numerical, statistical and algebraic skills needed in these subjects will be taught in the mathematical studies. However, it is a course suitable for all students who wish to develop their mathematical skill and confidence.
All students follow a core part of the course which examines personal finance, modelling and estimation, data handling and the critical analysis of data. Students at MV16 will also consider critical path and risk analysis, which we regard as providing a genuine benefit to our students later on in the world of work. At all times, the mathematics within this course is given a real-world application, and because of this will appeal to an even broader audience.
Since this course takes one year only, students can opt to follow it either as part of their Year 12 or Year 13 curriculum.
The examination comprises of two papers.
Paper 1 - The Core Assessment.
Paper 2B - Critical Path and Risk Analysis.
Each paper is 1 hour and 30 minutes long and both involve preliminary material, which can be scrutinised prior to the exam. Each paper is equally weighted.
In addition to the college entry requirements you will need a minimum of grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.
