English Literature

The focus of this English Literature course will involve you reading texts written across widely different time periods that explore the theme of ‘Love Through the Ages’. You will also read texts written within the narrower Modern Times period: from 1945 to the present day, and you will study various texts, both singly and comparatively.

Through studying English Literature you will enjoy reading widely and independently, engage critically with a substantial body of texts and will learn ways of responding to them, develop and effectively apply knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation, explore the contexts of the texts you are reading and others’ interpretations of them, deepen your appreciation and understanding of English Literature, including its changing traditions.

Paper 1: Love through the Ages—3 hours, 40% of A Level

Paper 2: Texts in shared contexts—2 hrs 30 mins, 40% of A Level—Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day

Extended essay: Independent Critical Study: Texts across Time (2500 words) and a bibliography, 20% of A Level
